We are shaped by our experiences interpreted through the lens of our beliefs and values, much of which have been conditioned. Just as our timeline of goals to be achieved is usually mapped from cultural expectations: finish college, find a well-paying job, get married, buy a house, have children, be productive. The way we interact can also be tainted, other times corrupted, by our very basic survival instinct to automatically react, take offence, personalize, defend, rather than thoughtfully respond. The pure essence we were born with gets lost as we start to conform to fit in, giving way to developing a self that unknowingly is false. For fear of rejection, rather than behaving authentically, we tend to act more in ways to gain external validation. Thus we travel along the much easier seen, well-trodden path previously worn down by others who went before us, until we realize that each person's journey is unique, making the path ours to forge.
